What is RSS and how does it work?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an easy way for you to keep updated automatically on websites you like. Instead of checking in on your favorite websites to see if they've posted a new article or feature, those new items will come to you - in the form of links listed handily on a single page. These links will lead you back to the original web page. Having them in one place allows you to sift through headlines and summaries from multiple websites quickly and conveniently.

The feature is powered by software that retrieves "feeds" from websites that you've specified. You can access the articles through a news reader that's easily downloaded and installed - or, more easily still, you can use an existing, web-based news reader (such as Google Reader, My Yahoo!, NewsGator and Bloglines) to receive your RSS links. The links will appear, updated in real time, right on your personal page.

View a directory of news readers from Google. (DART is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.)

DART offers RSS feeds for the topics listed above. The service is free and DART uses RSS 2.0.

How do I sign up for an RSS feed?

First, set up an account on your favorite web-based news reader (some popular examples are cited above). This is generally free and takes only a minute or two. Once you have done this, you need to navigate your way to the reader's RSS feature (some sites like NewsGator are entirely RSS-based) and find the function where you can "add feeds." There may be some pre-selected news sources that the site allows you to add with a click; to add other feeds, you will have to visit the source's web page.

XML button imageNot all news sources provide RSS feeds; many others may provide feeds for certain columnists or features, but not for the entire site. Where an RSS feed is available, you will see this little orange button.

If you click on it, you will be taken to an entire page of raw code, but you need not concern yourself with this. Instead, right click on the little orange button, and from the menu that appears, select "Copy Shortcut." [Note: If you're working on a Mac or for some other reason the right-click function doesn't work as it should, simply click on the orange XML button and go to the page of code. Highlight the URL address that appears in the address bar at the top of your browser and "Copy" it].

You then need to follow the instructions for your particular news reader in order to add this XML feed to your RSS list. Typically, this will simply involve pasting the URL shortcut (the one you just copied) into a field that says "Enter URL," "Import URL Feed," or something similar. Presto! You will now be kept abreast of all updates on the site or page that you have entered.

Add to Online Reader button imageDART pages that offer RSS-syndicated content also have a shortcut button included next to the XML button. To add DART feeds to a reader, click on the button and look for your news reader's button on the new screen that opens and click on it.
